About
Yards of Sewing is presently a home-based studio that was initially founded in South Africa a few years ago. I moved back to England in 2019 and have recently re-opened the studio after many months of lockdown. When I was 8 or 9 years old, I started to design on paper my dolls’outfits and using scraps of fabric from my mother’s sewing, I used to sew everything by hand. I was about 13 years old when I made my first short-sleeved blouse with a sewing machine.
Many sewers will tell you that sewing saves you money in the long run. A handmade garment customized to your body will be worn many times because it fits well and is of better quality. It also saves you time and frustration trying to find what you are looking for in the shops.
In my opinion, there is nothing more rewarding than wearing clothes that you make yourself. Starting from fabric hunting and pattern searching or vice-versa, to sewing the pieces together, the whole process has always given me great joy and satisfaction to such an extent that I decided to share my passion for sewing with others.
When I started teaching, it was clear to me that I was not just empowering many young or older women (and a few men too!) with new skills but I was also helping them to appreciate the need to relax, away from their hectic life and to find balance and wellbeing within themselves. Besides creating something they would have never thought possible to achieve, they also get the opportunity to share the joy and fun of sewing with others which is also priceless!
